NHL Roster Shaping Up, Bennett Sent Down

 (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)
Even after last night's eye-opening performance, Pens sent Beau Bennett back to WBS along with Jason Megna. Shocking, positively shocking. I for one thought Bennett would get a solid look at the second line spot, but it appears Eric Tangradi will wing Malkin and Neal. Could it work? Probably not. I'll bet Bennett will replace Tangradi after a month.

Brian Strait, even after playing a couple games in the Flyers playoff series when Paul Martin got injured, was placed on waivers to be reassigned to WBS. Opening the door for Simon Despres, Ben Lovejoy and Robert Bortuzzo. Bad luck for Strait. Hopefully he makes it through he waiver line safe. I'm a little apprehensive about Despres being full time NHL roster ready. But if Disco Dan thinks so, I'm in.

Worth noting, the other WBS guys called up for the scrimmage were all sent back down. Shocker.

Essentially now with a 23 man roster, this is what the opening day roster could look like:

Forwards: Craig Adams, Matt Cooke, Sidney Crosby, Pascal Dupuis, Tanner Glass, Dustin Jeffrey, Tyler Kennedy, Chris Kunitz, Evgeni Malkin,  James Neal, Brandon Sutter, Eric Tangradi and Joe Vitale

Defensemen: Robert Bortuzzo, Simon Despres, Deryk Engelland, Kris Letang, Ben Lovejoy, Paul Martin, Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik

Goatenders:  Marc-Andre Fleury and Tomas Vokoun

Tangradi deserves a shot

With is size could be a good complement

Tangradi is a guy you can't help but root for. But in my opinion he only has a few games to prove himself. Now, all we've seen of him this year is his accolades in WBS. Perhaps Bylsma and the rest of the coaching staff sees him as a viable option to fit in with Neal and Malkin. Speed and grit will be his two biggest issues. But he could benefit from being on this line if since he'll have tons of space to work with attention being given to Neal and Malkin.

Both Despres and Bennett are completely illogical moves. Despres is a big and dangerous gamble. If his confidence gets shaken early by hideous goals such as last night's goal 1, I don't see what that accomplishes for anyone. And we're now on year 4 of the Tangradi experiment, it's not like this kid has had no chances whatsoever. He's played 40 NHL games with 5 pts. Bennett is a low-risk, high-reward gamble on offense who is clearly supremely skilled and ready to contribute and produce as a rookie. Instead, we're saying awesome game, kiddo, now get on the bus. I am all except surprised. Bylsma has his preferences and he will see them through or else.

How the hell could Tangradi even be considered?? He isn't good enough for the 4th line let alone the 2nd! He has played a ton of games and look at his stats! Terrible! He is what he is, and what he is is a career ahl'er.

He also is not tough or use his size to any advantage. Hes useless to the Penns.

The Pens team this year are waaaaay too soft. Bylsma needs to take off his skirt as he was told last year. He has this team made up like a bunch of total sissies. Im sure their playing style will reflect that, and hopefully he finally gets what he deserves which is fired, for underachieving yet again after the last 3 years.
